Are you happy about the response that Nanban has been receiving?
VIJAY : I am pleased (smiled) that everyone likes the film. It is the victory of the script.
They say Nanban is a faithful remake and that’s why it worked. Was it a conscious effort to stick to the original?
VIJAY : Yes, initially when I met up with Shankar, he was very clear that we should not tamper with the script. He made a few subtle nativity changes, dialogues, the look and the songs. Rest of it is the same.
But how were you convinced about doing a remake like this, in which you didn’t have a mass hero image?
VIJAY: ( Thinking) I had seen 3 Idiots when it released and loved the film. Never in my wildest dream did I think that I will do the remake. But when Gemini approached me, I was in two minds but soon I heard that Shankar will direct the film and I was sure that it was a risk worth taking.
How was it working with Shankar?
VIJAY: He was a treat to work with. He gave me complete freedom and I realized that having done few dramas earlier, he is an amazing actor himself and that’s why he can enact the right emotion he wants for you.
Were you influenced by Aamir Khan’s acting in 3 Idiots?
Like I said earlier, I infused my style and body language to the role. But there are certain cute expressions that Aamir did in 3 Idiots which I didn’t want to miss and so I incorporated it in Nanban.
Are you changing tracks and trying to reinvent your image with Nanban?
VIJAY: I have been doing different kind of films for a long time and it’s surprising that you are making a note of it now. I have worked on diverse films like Kathalikku Mariyadai, Thullatha Manavum Thullum, Friends or Kaavalan at regular intervals. Somehow this news of me changing tracks with reputed directors like Shankar, Murugadoss and Gautham Menon has been doing the rounds.
Let me tell you that I always wanted to work in varied scripts but sadly no such scripts came knocking at my doors. And I was forced to go back and make a minimum guarantee mass film with four action scenes, song ‘n’ dances and viola, a film was ready. Films like Nanban has to happen and we can’t plan and go search for it.
Tell us about the rapport you shared with Jiiva and Srikanth?
When we started the film, I hardly knew them but by the time the film ended, I got two buddies for life. We bonded well and that shows in the film. They both did their respective roles with conviction and I love the scene when Srikanth confronts his dad. It was very touching.
All the songs are picturised lavishly. Which is your favourite?
VIJAY: Aska Laska and En Frienda Pola are my favourites. But lot of people like Irukkaanna choreographed by Farah Khan.
Heard that your wife Sangeetha hugged you after watching the film?
VIJAY : Yes, she was so happy and even said that it is my career best film. I went for some promotions after the first show and came back home late but my son was waiting for me. When I stepped out of my car he pulled down his pants and said “Thalaiva you are great” like how Jiiva and Srikanth does in the film. I was so touched and it was the biggest compliment I received.

This petrified finger found in cretaceous limestone, belonged to a "prehistoric" human. Broken short of the middle joint, it measures 7.6 cm (3 inches). At full length it would measure about 15 cm (6 inches).. In the photo, it is compared to a regular full-length finger. Excavations of this limestone has also revealed a child's tooth and human hair.

There are, of course, exceptions to this. The first place goes to Arya and Jiivaa’s friendship. Arya appeared in a guest role in Jeeva’s films ‘Siva Manasule Shakti’. Likewise Jiiva appeared in a guest role in Arya’s next film ‘Boss Engira Bhaskaran’. Another person who was lucky to enjoy such a friendship twice is director Rajesh Kumar.
Now there is going to be a third instance for him. But there won’t be a guest role for anyone and Arya and Jeeva would equally be heroes in the film. The director has written such a story and both the heroes have decided to jointly produce the film ◕‿◕

New dam is the only solution, says Kerala
Kerala on Monday asserted before the Supreme
Court-appointed Empowered Committee that the “construction of a new dam
is the only solution to the complex Mullaperiyar dam issue” and that it
would give more water to Tamil Nadu.
Appearing for
Kerala, senior counsel Rajeev Dhavan and counsel Mohan Katarki said: “If
the new dam is feasible and the proposal of Kerala is found… reasonable
by the Empowered Committee, there is no need for addressing the issue
of safety of the old dam.”
Counsel submitted that the
question whether the dam was safe or not could not be decided with
certainty as there was no sign or scientific method. “The ownership of
the new dam would vest with Kerala as it is funding the dam entirely
from its pocket. However, the operation of the reservoir shall be by a
joint committee of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.” At this juncture, the panel,
headed by the former Chief Justice of India, A.S. Anand, wanted to know
whether an independent committee could be constituted to
manage/regulate/operate the new dam. Both counsel for Kerala and Tamil
Nadu said they would get instructions and file their response. Kerala
argued that it had the right to construct a new dam, and no clearance
was required from the Centre. However, for obtaining statutory
clearances from the Ministry of Environment and Forests, technical
clearance from the Central Water Commission would become necessary.

Rajinikanth did not have a single release in 2011 but still continues to be the numero 1 position in spite of his illness. He grabbed headlines when he fell sick, for Rana and towards the end of the year with Kochadiyaan, which has announced a 2012 release.
Kamal too did not have any release last year but was also in the news for announcing Viswaroopam with ace director Selvaraghavan and later falling out with him and decided to direct the film, touted to be a 120 Crore project, himself.
Ajit’s brand value went a notch high with the opening of Mankatha this year. He held his position firmly proving that he is the king of opening at the turnstiles. The actor will have Billa-2 in 2012.
Vijay continued his rock steady position on top in our power list and his two releases Kaavalan and Velayudham made money for its producers and the audiences and his fans were happy. Nanban, Thuppakki and Yohan – the list looks shining for Vijay in 2012.
Vikram wowed the audience with Deivathirumagal a rehash of I’m Sam, with a class act but his next film Rajapattai fell like nine pins, without even taking an opening. We are sure he will bounce back with Karikalan and Thaandavam in 2012.
Looks like Dhanush can do no wrong this season. 2011 was the most memorable year for Dhanush who grabbed headlines for many reasons. His knockout performance in Aadukalam followed by a National Award for Best Actor, his Kolaveri went viral and the actor went global, critical acclaim for another stellar performance in Mayakkam Enna, announcement of 3 to be directed by his wife Aishwarya- truly Dhanush was all over.
Jiiva was touted to be in the A-list of stars with Ko but his next releases Routhiram and Vandaan Vendran were damp squibs which affected his popularity and questions his star charisma and opening factor.
Actors who failed to impress in 2011 were Arya with just one release Avan Ivan in which he was overshadowed by Vishal and Jayam Ravi who didn’t win any hearts with that romantic musical Engeyum Kadhal. Vishal created a buzz around himself for Avan Ivan act but the poor show of Vedi at the box-office puts his star power to question. Bharath was a part of Vaanam with Silambarasan but his solo release Yuvan Yuvathi was a dud.
Promising stars of 2011 who impressed with their superlative acting were Prasanna with Muran, Vimal with Vaagai Sooda Vaa and Ethan, Jai with Engeyum Eppodhum and Arulnithi with Mounaguru.
Bharath,Vishnu,Aadhi, Karan, Shantanoo,Prashanth, Narain, Nanda and, Sasikumar find themselves left out of the power list this year as they failed to create any impact ◕‿◕
